April Love and beyond…

Competing against Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly for the top spot on the charts, Pat Boone didn’t think the pretty but slow-moving arrangement of “April Love” was commercial enough to be a hit. |

Where the boys are!
Released to theaters earlier in the winter, Where The Boys Are eventually inspired thousands of additional American college students to head to Fort Lauderdale for their annual spring vacation.
|
Where The Boys Are is a movie about four college co-eds going on spring break in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The MGM picture was one of the first teen films to explore adolescent sexuality and the changing sexual morals and attitudes among American college youth in the 1960s.
Each of the four girls has her own spring vacation agenda. Merritt (Dolores Hart) is the smart and assertive leader of the group. As the film opens, she expresses the opinion that premarital sex might be okay. That eventually inspires insecure Melanie (Yvette Mimieux) to lose her virginity soon after the girls arrive in town. Tuggle (Paula Prentiss), however, seeks to be a “baby-making factory.” All she needs is a man to join her in marriage. Angie (Connie Francis) rounds out the group as a girl clumsily looking for romance. The boys include actors George Hamilton, Jim Hutton and Frank Gorshin. The girls find their beliefs challenged throughout the film. Merritt meets a suave Ivy Leaguer named Ryder (George Hamilton) and realizes she’s not ready for sex. Melanie discovers that the boy she thought loved her was only using her. Tuggle quickly fixes her focus on the goofy TV Thompson (Jim Hutton), but becomes disillusioned when he becomes enamored with an older “mermaid” swimmer/dancer (Barbara Nichols). Angie stumbles into love with the eccentric jazz musician Basil (Frank Gorshin). Merritt, Tuggle and Angie’s adolescent boy seeking holiday quickly evaporates when they discover Melanie in her distressed state. |

“Al Di La“ was already popular in Italy before Connie Francis recorded her versions of the song. As with “Where The Boys Are“ she recorded two Italian versions that were popular in Mexico and Latin America. And she did this Italian/English version that was popular in Europe and parts of Asia. It was on the Hot 100 here, too. |
(”Al di là” means ”Beyond”) Connie’s bilingual version (#90) of “Al Di La” was the “B” side of “I’m Gonna Be Warm This Winter” (#18) (1962) Play it • Lyrics • Download the MP3 |

| APRIL LOVE Lyrics Pat Boone (Listen to “April Love” by Pat Boone.) |
April love is for the very young
Every star’s a wishing star that shines for you
April love is all the seven wonders
One little kiss can tell you this is true
Sometimes an April day will suddenly bring showers
Rain to grow the flowers for her first bouquet
But April love can slip right through your fingers
So if she’s the one don’t let her run away
Sometimes an April day will suddenly bring showers
Rain to grow the flowers for her first bouquet
But April love can slip right through your fingers
So if she’s the one don’t let her run away

| WHERE THE BOYS ARE Lyrics Connie Francis (Listen to “Where The Boys Are” by Connie Francis.) |
Where the boys are, someone waits for me
A smilin’ face, a warm embrace, two arms to hold me tenderly
Where the boys are, my true love will be
He’s walkin’ down some street in town and I know he’s lookin’ there for me
In the crowd of a million people I’ll find my valentine
And then I’ll climb to the highest steeple and tell the world he’s mine
Till he holds me I wait impatiently
Where the boys are, where the boys are
Where the boys are, someone waits for me
Till he holds me I wait impatiently
Where the boys are, where the boys are
Where the boys are, someone waits for me
