April Love and beyond…

Here are some spring-inspired hit songs from the late fifties and early sixties that come to us from motion pictures. The two songs (with similar opening sequences) celebrate young people in the spring. One was a world-wide favorite from a movie about students on spring break. The lesson from the other song is that April Love is for young people (and those who are young at heart.) But, it can slip right through your fingers…                 April Love         Where The Boys Are

April Love
Competing against Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly for the top spot on the charts, Pat Boone didn’t think the pretty but slow-moving arrangement of “April Love” was commercial enough to be a hit.

The title song to his film April Love was written for Boone by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster, Academy Award winners for “Love Is a Many Splendored Thing” and “Secret Love.” “I was honored,” says Pat, “but at the same time it didn’t sound commercial. In the heyday of rock and roll, what chance did a sweet simple little song have?

“In the recording session, I said to Billy Vaughn, who arranged it, we need something to goose this song up a little bit. I said we need something to make it sound important.” Pat thought the proper intro would say that something was about to happen, so he sat down and wrote the ten notes that open the song.

April Love

April Love is for the very young
(and it can slip right through your fingers)

The movie April Love is a remake (with music) of an earlier film Home in Indiana. Pat Boone stars as Nicky, a young petty criminal who is sent, on parole, to work on a Kentucky horse farm. There in the beautiful Lexington, Kentucky countryside, he meets a girl, Liz, played by Shirley Jones. He takes an interest in her and in training trotters. The movie was nominated for an Academy Award. The song was a number one hit on the Billboard Top 100, Best Seller and Disc Jockey charts in 1957. It peaked at #7 in the UK.

Connie Francis made her acting debut in MGM’s
Where The Boys Are

Where The Boys Are Movie 1960

Released to theaters earlier in the winter, Where The Boys Are eventually inspired thousands of additional American college students to head to Fort Lauderdale for their annual spring vacation.

Dolores Hart and Elvis   Dolores Hart played the role of Merritt Andrews in Where The Boys Are. It was one of 10 movies she made in 5 years. (Including 2 with Elvis Presley.) At age 25, she retired from acting and became a Roman Catholic Nun, taking her final vows in 1970.
Where The Boys Are is a movie about four college co-eds going on spring break in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The MGM picture was one of the first teen films to explore adolescent sexuality and the changing sexual morals and attitudes among American college youth in the 1960s.

Each of the four girls has her own spring vacation agenda. Merritt (Dolores Hart) is the smart and assertive leader of the group. As the film opens, she expresses the opinion that premarital sex might be okay. That eventually inspires insecure Melanie (Yvette Mimieux) to lose her virginity soon after the girls arrive in town. Tuggle (Paula Prentiss), however, seeks to be a “baby-making factory.” All she needs is a man to join her in marriage. Angie (Connie Francis) rounds out the group as a girl clumsily looking for romance.

The boys include actors George Hamilton, Jim Hutton and Frank Gorshin.

The girls find their beliefs challenged throughout the film. Merritt meets a suave Ivy Leaguer named Ryder (George Hamilton) and realizes she’s not ready for sex. Melanie discovers that the boy she thought loved her was only using her. Tuggle quickly fixes her focus on the goofy TV Thompson (Jim Hutton), but becomes disillusioned when he becomes enamored with an older “mermaid” swimmer/dancer (Barbara Nichols). Angie stumbles into love with the eccentric jazz musician Basil (Frank Gorshin).

Merritt, Tuggle and Angie’s adolescent boy seeking holiday quickly evaporates when they discover Melanie in her distressed state.

It’s a brand new year, and now who’s sorry?
(April 9, 2008)

It's a brand new year, and now who's sorry? Listen to:

The song Where The Boys Are was written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield. It peaked at #4 on the Billboard™ Hot 100 on January 30, 1961. It went to #5 in the UK, #6 in Ireland, #5 in Australia, and #4 in New Zealand. But that was not the end of the song’s popularity. Connie was able to take this great Neil Sedaka song and record it in multiple languages, and then have a hit all around the world. She recorded it in Neapolitan and Italian. (”Qualcuno Mi Aspetta” spent five weeks at #1 in Italy starting in May 1961.) She also had Spanish*, German, French and Japanese versions. And if you think that she couldn’t have been convincing when singing in alternate tongues, listen to this:

Donde Hay Chicos · Connie Francis · 1961 (Spanish)

  Toca la canción.

* This youtube video of the Spanish version of “Where The Boys Are”:
Donde Hay Chicos has (following it) a 1964 television clip of Connie singing her Italian/English version of ”Al Di La.” A beautiful bonus!

Donde hay chicos...hay chicas

Al Di La was already popular in Italy before Connie Francis recorded her versions of the song. As with Where The Boys Are she recorded two Italian versions that were popular in Mexico and Latin America. And she did this Italian/English version that was popular in Europe and parts of Asia. It was on the Hot 100 here, too.

  (”Al di là” means ”Beyond”)
Connie’s bilingual version (#90) of “Al Di La” was the “B” side of “I’m Gonna Be Warm This Winter” (#18) (1962)

APRIL LOVE Lyrics
Pat Boone
(Listen to “April Love” by Pat Boone.)

April love is for the very young
Every star’s a wishing star that shines for you
April love is all the seven wonders
One little kiss can tell you this is true

Sometimes an April day will suddenly bring showers
Rain to grow the flowers for her first bouquet
But April love can slip right through your fingers
So if she’s the one don’t let her run away

Sometimes an April day will suddenly bring showers
Rain to grow the flowers for her first bouquet
But April love can slip right through your fingers
So if she’s the one don’t let her run away

WHERE THE BOYS ARE Lyrics
Connie Francis
(Listen to “Where The Boys Are” by Connie Francis.)

Where the boys are, someone waits for me
A smilin’ face, a warm embrace, two arms to hold me tenderly
Where the boys are, my true love will be
He’s walkin’ down some street in town and I know he’s lookin’ there for me

In the crowd of a million people I’ll find my valentine
And then I’ll climb to the highest steeple and tell the world he’s mine

Till he holds me I wait impatiently
Where the boys are, where the boys are
Where the boys are, someone waits for me

Till he holds me I wait impatiently
Where the boys are, where the boys are
Where the boys are, someone waits for me

AL DI LA Lyrics
Connie Francis
(Listen to “Al Di La” by Connie Francis.)

La la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la…

Al di lá del bene   Beyond the most
Più prezioso, ci sei tu   precious good, there you are
Al di lá del sogno   Beyond the most
Più ambizioso, ci sei tu   ambitious dream, there you are

Al di lá delle cose più belle   Beyond the most beautiful things
Al di lá delle stelle, ci sei tu   Beyond the stars, there you are
Al di lá, ci sei tu per me   Beyond, there you are for me
Per me, soltanto per me   For me, just for me

Al di la means you are
Far above me, very far
Every star will light
The way above me
To where you are

Just to measure your worth
I’d move heaven and earth
To be near you

You’re my life
You’re my love
You’re my all al di lá

La la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la…

Al di lá della volta infinita   Beyond the infinite heaven
Al di la della vita, ci sei tu   Beyond life, there you are
Al di lá ci sei tu per me   Beyond, there you are for me

La la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la…
Al di lá   Beyond…
