In mythology, Venus was the Roman goddess of love, beauty, and fertility.

In art, she was famously represented in Botticelli’s “The Birth Of Venus” and in many other paintings and sculptures.

And in the pop music of 1962, she was a teenage cutie in blue jeans.

Yeah, baby, she’s got it

There already had been a chart topping song with the title “Venus” back in 1959. About twenty years later another “Venus” would occupy the #1 spot on the Hot 100. This one was written by Dutch musician Robbie van Leeuwen. His group, the Shocking Blue, recorded it and it went to number 3 on the Dutch top 40 in the summer of 1969. Then it went to number one in Belgium, France, Italy, Spain and Germany. “Venus” topped the Billboard chart in February, 1970. In Holland, “Venus” re-entered the top 40 because of its American success—and peaked at number three again. In this country, it was their only top 40 charting song.

The British female pop group Bananarama covered it in the eighties, resulting in another international number one hit. (However, it only reached #8 in the UK.)

VENUS Lyrics
Frankie Avalon
(Listen to “Venus” by Frankie Avalon.)

Hey, Venus.
Oh, Venus.

Venus, if you will,
please send a little girl for me to thrill–
a girl who wants my kisses and my arms,
a girl with all the charms of you.

Venus, make her fair,
a lovely girl with sunlight in her hair.
And take the brightest stars up in the skies
and place them in her eyes for me.

Venus, goddess of love that you are,
surely the things I ask
can’t be too great a task.

Venus, if you do,
I promise that I always will be true.
I’ll give her all the love I have to give
as long as we both shall live.

Venus, goddess of love that you are,
surely the things I ask
can’t be too great a task.

Venus if you do,
I promise that I always will be true.
I’ll give her all the love I have to give
as long as we both shall live.

Hey, Venus.
Oh, Venus.
Make my wish come true.

VENUS IN BLUE JEANS Lyrics
Jimmy Clanton
(Listen to “Venus in Blue Jeans” by Jimmy Clanton.)

She’s Venus in blue jeans,
Mona Lisa with a pony tail.
She’s a walking-talking work of art.
She’s the girl who stole my heart.

My Venus in blue jeans
is the Cinderella I adore.
She’s my very special angel too–
a fairy tale come true.

They say there’s seven wonders in the world,
but what they say is out of date.
There’s more than seven wonders in the world.
I just met number eight.

My Venus in blue jeans
is everything I hoped she’d be–
a teenage goddess from above.
And she belongs to me!

My Venus in blue jeans
is everything I hoped she’d be–
a teenage goddess from above.
And she belongs to me!

VENUS Lyrics
Shocking Blue
(Listen to “Venus” by the Shocking Blue.)

A goddess on a mountain top
Was burning like a silver flame,
The summit of beauty and love,
And Venus was her name.

She’s got it,
Yeah, baby, she’s got it.
Well, I’m your Venus,
I’m your fire at your desire.
Well, I’m your Venus,
I’m your fire at your desire.

Her weapons were her crystal eyes
Making ev’ry man mad.
Black as a dark night she was,
Got what no one else had.
Wow!

She’s got it,
Yeah, baby, she’s got it.
Well, I’m your Venus,
I’m your fire at your desire.
Well, I’m your Venus,
I’m your fire at your desire.

Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah!
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah!

She’s got it,
Yeah, baby, she’s got it.
Well, I’m your Venus,
I’m your fire at your desire.
Well, I’m your Venus,
I’m your fire at your desire.
